How do I properly measure my post?

It is important to make sure you are purchasing the correct size BollardGard bollard cover for your post.  The first step is to make sure you are properly measuring the post you are trying to cover. There are two common methods that we recommend using to get an accurate measurement.

The first method is to measure straight across the top of your pipe.  This will give you the outside diameter (OD) of your post.  One thing to keep in mind is that if your pipe is filled with concrete and it has been overfilled, it may be difficult to get an exact measurement.  In some cases, the slightest mismeasurement will change your required bollard cover size.  Measuring over the domed concrete tends to add additional length and will mislead you on what size bollard cover you need to use.

The second method will give you the most accurate result, which is by measuring the circumference of the post.  The circumference is the measurement around the post.  We recommend using a soft or flexible measuring tape for this method because the tighter the tape measure fits around the pipe, the more accurate your measurement will be.  If you do not have a flexible tape measure handy, you can use a piece of string and wrap it around the post, mark the string where the ends meet, and then lay the string flat to measure it.  Once you have circumference, you can either tell us and we will let you know what size cover you need or you can divide that number by 3.14 (pi) to calculate the diameter.  For example, if your post measures 14.13” and you divide that by pi, you will get 4.5”, which means our 4” (4.7” ID) BollardGard bollard cover will work on that post.

We have created a chart below to help you easily determine what size cover you will need from the measurement you have taken.

If you are still not confident with the measurements you have taken, we have a few tools that can assist you.  We have a sizing template that can printed at 100% and used as a guide  Once you have printed the file, place it on top of your pipe and follow the guides to determine your size BollardGard. This works best if your pipe is flat across the top and does not have a dome from being overfilled with concrete.  Click here for our BollardGard Sizing Guide PDF. We can also mail you a sizing ring kit.  Once you receive the sizing rings, you simply place them over the top of your pipe to see which will work best for you. Keep in mind that they may not be a tight fit, but no worries!  All of our bollard covers come with gripper tabs or foam strips (if requested) to secure the bollard cover to your post. Or, you can call us at 800-516-9287 and we can walk you through the measuring process.
